Verizon Sheds Latin American Assets

in a Wall Street Journal article Verizon announced is "selling its Caribbean and Latin American telecom operations for about $3.7 billion. Verizon will sell its interests in providers in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Verizon will sell Verizon Dominicana and its a 52% interest in Telecomunicaciones de Puerto Rico Inc. to America Movil SA. An entity jointly owned by America Movil and Telefonos de Mexico SA has agreed to purchase Verizon's 28.5% interest in Nacional Telefonos de Venezuela, or CANTV."
I guess the Verizon guy's "Can you hear me now?"commercials just arent as catchy and funny when translated in spanish? "me escuchas ahora?" yeah not funny.. the only other thing I can think of is that GSM has much more presence in latin america than CDMA technology and now w\ 3G already deployed in countries like mexico and brazil.. it doesnt leave much entry for Verizon..
